Updated: Sep 30

With household income growth stagnating and dining-out expectations declining, consumer confidence is waning across China's retail sectors. This month’s China Consumer Sentiment Study details the performance in August 2025 and explores how sluggish growth is impacting consumer behavior.

Highlights:

  • Household income net growth remains at low levels with no significant growth drivers.

  • The trend of declining dining-out expectations continues.

  • Home cooking is the only spending category to show an increase compared to the 2024 average.

  • Consumer confidence has weakened across retail sectors.
